Ooblek
By:Justin
Ooblek
is a Non-Newtonian fluid made with corn starch and water. A
Non-Newtonian fluid is a fluid that doesn't follow Isaac Newtons laws
of physics. This means that it isn't a solid, or a liquid, it is both.
When
not in motion, the Ooblek is a liquid. It flows, it fills its
container, and you can pour it. But, when you apply pressure, this
simple mixture turns into a solid.
This
happens because the long, straw-like particles of the corn starch latch
together. Because of this reaction, the object applying pressure won't
be able to pass through it. Just be careful, you might hurt your hand
if you punch it too hard. You also add food coloring so it isn't just
plain white.
It is a very easy home
expirament. For every 1 cup of corn
starch you use, add 1/2 cups of water. You can add more water if you
want it thinner, or more corn starch if you want it thicker. You can
stir it with your hands or with a stick, or something. It might be a
bit hard because of the reaction that I told you about earlier. Now,
this might make a bit of a mess, so try to wear some old clothes that
your not afraid of getting dirty. After that, just have fun! It might
dry out after a while, so just add a bit more water.
