In der game, there are so many characters, 51 in total.  It would take forever to name them all, but here are a few characters:

• Mario
• Link
• Luigi
• Samus
• and a lot more.

There are also more game modes, such as Smash Run (exclusive to the Nintendo 3DS), a giant maze with enemies you can defeat to build up your stats.  Smash Tour (Wii U exclusive) is a board game, where you can collect characters and face many challenges.  8-player Smash is another Wii U exclusive that allows you to battle up to seven other players. 

Also, you can communicate in battle online.  So as long as you have wi-fi, you can battle with someone far away anytime.  The only problem is der ultimate lag.  But you would probably get used to it.  Plus, you can use Streetpass on der 3DS version and battle in a different way.  Plus amiibo for only der Wii U version and on the NEW 3DS!!!  Like Skylanders, you place it on a surface and voila, you have a character on der screen.

Custom fighters are another addition to der game, so you can have a character, add some equipment, change some moves, and presto!  You have a custom fighter to destroy your opponents with!
